Paternity Law in Texas

What’s Paternity Law in Texas?

How do you establish paternity in Texas?  Or in other words, how do you figure out who’s the father of the baby?  Family Law Attorney Vonda Covington answers that question in this video.  If you’d like a consultation to talk with Vonda, please call 281-762-0578.

Summary of Vonda’s Paternity Law Video

– I’m Vonda Covington. I’m a family law attorney in Richmond, Texas. I’ve been practicing family law now since 1993, and one of the terms that we hear, in family law, and we probably, you guys have probably heard this term, too, is Baby Daddy and Baby Mama. That’s my Baby Daddy. That’s the person who is the daddy to your baby.

You’re not married, may not even have a relationship with each other, and I have seen this. Two ships, passing in the night, get a little intimate, nine months later there’s a little human being. What do you do in a situation like this?

How is Paternity Established in Texas

You may not know much about each other, you may not really like each other, but now, oh my god, you’ve got a baby together. One parent or the other, should file a suit for paternity, to have the parentage of the child adjudicated.

We usually get DNA testing done to confirm that this genuinely is the dad of the baby. The mom will usually be known. That’s not typically a big issue in the way our society is right now, but for dad there are sometimes questions and it’s a good idea to just put those to rest.

The Paternity Process Includes Child Support and Child Custody

During that process, we work out parenting times, we work out who has what kind of decision-making capacity, and we work out who pays what expenses for the kid. Whether it’s going to be through child support, whether it’s going to be splitting expenses, those kinds of things. We try to preserve the relationship between mom and baby and dad and baby.

Talk with a Family Law Attorney to Get Started

Don’t be afraid if you have a baby and a baby daddy or if you have a baby and baby mommy. But it’s a really good idea to meet with a family law attorney, find out exactly what the process would be for you, and what your options are.  There are options to preserve your relationship with the child, options if you’re the person with whom the baby’s living, to get some help with the expenses of the child, and that’s just part of being a parent. So, good luck to you.
